A SaaS platform modernized live
A subscription platform for animal breeders, modernized one module at a time.
What we did

From product debt
to a modern SaaS platform.
The client runs a subscription software platform for animal breeders, helping them manage records, breeding, health, finances, and day-to-day operations.
After years of continuous development, the product had grown into a valuable platform — but its underlying technology was becoming harder to extend and maintain.
We joined as a long-term engineering partner to modernize the product without disrupting the live business. The result: a cleaner product experience, a stronger technical foundation, and significantly less manual work across key workflows.

Modernizing a live product
is different from starting from scratch.
The platform already had years of business logic, customer data, and established workflows. We had to improve the product without losing what already worked.
01
The existing architecture was slowing development
The product had grown continuously over many years, making new feature development increasingly difficult.
02
Subscription management needed a stronger foundation
Customers could subscribe through different payment channels, making consistent subscription and entitlement management important.
03
Existing customer data needed to come with them
New customers often had years of records stored elsewhere. Moving to a new platform shouldn't mean starting over.
04
Product access needed to be consistent
Different plans came with different features and usage limits. Those rules needed to work consistently across the application.
05
The product needed to support different account structures
Breeding operations can involve multiple people, locations, and shared responsibilities, requiring flexible account and permission management.
06
The platform needed room for what's next
The business wanted to introduce new capabilities without adding more complexity to an already ageing foundation.

We modernized,
progressively.
Instead of replacing the entire application at once, the new experience was introduced alongside the existing product. Modules moved across gradually, keeping the business operational throughout the process.
01
Understand the existing product first
Years of development had created valuable business rules and workflows. Before rebuilding a module, we studied how the existing experience worked so important behavior wasn't lost during modernization.
02
Build reusable foundations
Shared components, services, and application patterns meant new functionality could be developed consistently instead of solving the same problem repeatedly.
03
Release changes gradually
Feature flags and controlled releases allowed the business to introduce new functionality without making every change a high-risk release.
04
Focus on the workflows that mattered most
Onboarding, billing, entitlements, and core customer workflows received particular attention because improvements in these areas directly affect the customer experience and business operations.
Five shifts,
one platform built to keep evolving.
The core product was progressively moved onto a modern application architecture — module by module, without ever taking the live platform down.
01
A modern application experience
The core product was progressively moved onto a modern application architecture with reusable components and a more consistent user experience.
02
A stronger subscription foundation
Subscription plans, feature access, and usage limits were brought into a more consistent system across purchasing channels.
03
Simpler onboarding
Customers can bring existing records into the platform, reducing the effort required to get started.
04
A reusable product foundation
Common components and services make it easier to introduce new functionality without rebuilding the same foundations each time.
05
Room for new experiences
The modernized platform provides a foundation for additional product surfaces while keeping them connected to the core product.

A central place for
everything a breeder tracks.
Four core surfaces bring together the records, schedules, and information breeders rely on every day.

Animal & record management
A central place for managing the records that breeders rely on every day.

Breeding & scheduling
Planning tools that help users manage breeding activity, important dates, and recurring tasks.

Health & performance
Health, weight, and performance information brought together with the rest of the animal record.

Financial management
Tools for tracking the financial side of the operation without relying entirely on separate spreadsheets.
From a long-running legacy experience
to a modern architecture — live throughout.
The product was progressively moved from a long-running legacy experience to a modern application architecture while remaining live throughout the transition.
Core workflows were rebuilt around reusable components, shared services, and a more consistent product structure.
At the same time, we strengthened the commercial foundation around subscriptions, entitlements, and customer onboarding — so the platform could keep evolving without every new feature adding another layer of technical complexity.

Reports & insights
Reporting capabilities that turn operational records into useful information for day-to-day decisions.
A stronger commercial foundation
Subscriptions, entitlements, and customer onboarding were strengthened alongside the core product, not bolted on afterward.
New product experiences
Marketplace functionality, event & show management, and referrals can build on the same platform foundation instead of becoming isolated products.

The result wasn't just a modern UI.
The real value was giving a mature SaaS product a foundation that could keep up with the business. The platform can now evolve faster, onboard customers more efficiently, and support new capabilities without repeatedly working around the limitations of its past.
Every discipline this build touched.
From product modernization and frontend engineering through backend infrastructure, data workflows, and integrations — the disciplines behind a live product transformation.

The impact was
bigger than a new interface.
Import and onboarding improvements reduced the manual work needed to get existing records into the platform. A modern architecture and reusable components made new features faster to build and release. A more consistent subscription foundation reduced billing-related work reaching the support team. And more day-to-day data handling could happen inside the platform instead of through manual processes.
